नवग्रह में सूर्य प्रथम ग्रह है और इसे ग्रहों का राजा भी माना जाता है। सूर्योदय से ही दिन की शुरुआत होती है। सूर्य के एक माह में राशि परिवर्तन को संक्रांति के नाम से जाना जाता है। दरअसल, एक संक्रांति से दूसरी संक्रांति की अवधि ही सौरमास है। सूर्य 12 संक्रांतिया होती हैं। प्रत्येक संक्रांति का काल गणना की दृष्टि से बहुत महत्व है, क्योंकि संक्रांति से ही ऋतुएं परिवर्तित होती है। सूर्य जब मकर रेखा से भूमध्य रेखा कर्क रेखा की ओर गमन करता है तो उत्तरायण होता है। उत्तरायण के छह महीनों में सूर्य, कुम्भ, मीन, मेष, वृषभ और मिथुन इन छह राशियों का भ्रमण करते हैं।
सनातन धर्मानुसार दक्षिणायन के छह महीनों को देवताओं की रात्रि मानी जाती है। उत्तरायण के समय पृथ्वी देवलोक के सामने से गुजरती है। इसलिए स्वर्ग के देवता उत्तरायण काल में पृथ्वी पर भ्रमण करने आते हैं तथा पृथ्वी पर मनुष्यों द्वारा दिया गया हविष्य आदि स्वर्ग के देवताओं को शीघ्र ही प्राप्त हो जाता है। इसलिए उत्तरायण को एक पुनीत काल भी माना जाता है।
उत्तरायण जीवन ही नहीं मृत्यु के लिए भी शुभ कहा जाता है। इसीलिए भीष्म पितामह ने महाभारत के समय देह त्याग हेतु मृत्यु शैय्या लेटे—लेटे सूर्य के उत्तरायण होने की प्रतीक्षा की थी। श्रीमद्भगवत गीता में श्रीकृष्ण ने कहा है कि उत्तरायण के छह माह में मरे योगीजन ब्रह्म को ही प्राप्त होते हैं।
संक्रांति पुण्य काल प्रातः 6 बजे सूर्योदय से सूर्यास्त तक पवित्र नदियों में स्नान करके एक तांबे के लोटे में शुद्ध जल भरकर उसमें रोली, अक्षत, पुष्प, गुड़, तिल मिलाकर पूर्वाभिमुख होकर दोनों हाथों को ऊंचा करके सूर्यदेव को श्रद्धापूर्वक अर्घ्य प्रदान करना चाहिए। सूर्य की साधना से कुंति को कर्ण प्राप्त हुआ। सूर्य की साधना से युधिष्ठर को अक्षत प्राप्त हुआ। सूर्य की साधना से श्रीकृष्ण पुत्र साम्ब को कुष्ठ रोग से मुक्ति मिली। सूर्य की ही आराधना से श्रीराम ने रावण पर विजय प्राप्त की थी।
सच तो यह है कि मकर संक्रांति पर सूर्य मेष लग्न से दशम स्थान पर आ जाता है। अतः कर्म सथान पर आ जाता है। सूर्य सभी व्यक्तियों को कर्म करने की प्रेरणा देता है।
तिल दानःपाप नाश
मकर संक्रांति पुण्य काल से तिल के तेल की मालिश(उबटन)लगाकर तिल मिश्रित जल से स्नान, तिल का हवन, तिल तर्पण, श्वेत तिल युक्त वस्तुओं का दान एवं सेवन करने से पूर्व जन्म के पाप नष्ट होते हैं। धर्मशास्त्रों के मतानुसार संक्रांति पुण्यकाल में सफेद तिल से देवताओं का और काले तिल से पितरों का तर्पण करना चाहिए। मकर संक्रांति का पर्व ही एक ऐसा पर्व है, जिसमें देवता और पित्तरों का मिलन होता है और इस पुण्य अवसर पर दोनों से आशीर्वाद प्राप्त होता है।
